Eve is having dreams about her time as Livia and when she wakes up from the uncomfortable
nightmares, Xena is there to comfort her but Eve is unwilling to talk about what she's been
dreaming about. She, Xena and Gabrielle are heading toward a town where a festival is going on,
and where they will be meeting up with Virgil.
When they meet Virgil, they reacquaint and learn that he had won a bard competition recently
in Thebes. Then some Roman soldiers come in to arrest Eve and take her away for the crimes she
committed against Rome: she killed Augustus. This is a complete shock to both Xena and Gabrielle
but Eve is willing to go with them because she knows what she has done. Xena, Gabrielle and
Virgil come along to be there for her trial.
While locked up in the dungeon in Rome, Eve reveals what it is that they accuse her of. Xena
is feeling overprotective and just wants the best for her daughter, and Eve talks with Virgil
about why she killed Augustus and that she partly believes she's not worth saving (though Xena
would say otherwise). She knows she's guilty and is ready to take the punishment for it.
In the past, Eve arrived at Rome after turning from her ways as Livia in order to make peace
with the people of Rome. Augustus allows her to speak to the people before the Gladiator events.
She gives her plea in front of the people, how she's sorry about what she's done. But once the
gladiator games begin, she begins to see a side of Augustus that she's not particularly happy
with: he's ruthless and cold, having prisoners who probably committed no crimes fight to the
death in the arena because it is the Roman way. She pleads with him that this is not how he
should run the empire, he should be better than Caesar was before him, but he does not
listen.
While Eve is deciding what should be done about Augustus, Michael visits her and tells her
not to be afraid. That's what makes up her mind about what she must do.
She talks with Virgil about this in the present just before trial begins.
At the trial, the new emperor Claudius, brings in a witness who says she is sure that Eve
would have killed Augustus. She begins speaking of how Livia was in lead with Ares and with the
God of War on her side, she was capable of absolutely anything.
